It's Graduation Day for Drake

AUBREY “ DRAKE” GRAHAM already has one prerequisite crossed off what seems any aspiring rapper’s to-do list—he survived a bullet. Granted, it was for a Colombine-style high school shooting scene in Degrassi: The Next Generation.

“I’ll be honest,” says the 22-year-old as he leaves his Toronto home, studio-bound. “I’m an actor. I’m not a thug who decided to be in a movie and play himself. I’m not reppin’ a ’hood, I’m not claiming a set, no street shit. I try and keep my lyrics triumphant.”

Once eight years of playing the studious Jimmy Brooks on the small screen, Drake is stealing a move from Allen Iverson’s playbook: the classic crossover. All it took was the monster mixtapes Room for Improvement (2006) and Comeback Season (2007), the slinky single “Replacement Girl” featuring Trey Songz, and the riotous “Ransom” with a particularly energetic Lil Wayne.

Once rumors of signing with Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment began floating, the Toronto-native started being wooed by the majors. “I’m finishing up negotiations on a deal I’m very, very happy with,” says Drake. “I’ve had a chance to sit down with Jimmy Iovine from Interscope and work out a great situation.” His official debut, Thank Me Later, will hit in early 2009.
So after flipping off the notion of street cred, hip hop’s next Fresh Prince is spitting with everything he’s got. It’s all blood, sweat, and tears—even if it is just stage blood.

“Well here it is, the complete series of my version of 808s & Heartbreak song covers! I begin with the initial cover for the album, and then go song by song, as they’re presented on the album, each telling a story through imagery, as a metaphor for the journey Kanye West has traveled that allowed us this genius piece of work, 808s & Heartbreak. Each cover looks to create a sort of frame by frame for the album as a whole, with imagery relating to each song, a still shot from each song that allows you to use the lyrics and project your interpretations of each song onto the piece. This is my tribute to Kanye West, whose trials and tribulations have undoubtedly made this the album of the year, if not this decade in my opinion, and a tribute to his mother Donda West as well. First thing's first if you haven't heard of this guy yet, you need to. Aubrey "Drake" Graham, better known for playing the character "Jimmy Brooks" from Degrassi: The Next Generation, has been working on his music career for the past few years and is finally getting recognized for all his hard work. I've been following him and his music for the past year and a bit and since then it just seems to be snowballing and getting better and better. From working with local artists in T.O. such as Bishop Brigante and JD Era just to name a few, to international artists like Treazon, Nikelus F, Trey Songz, and recently Lil' Wayne. Drake can keep it moving one minute, and slow it down the next in a way not many people can do. Even though many actors who turn to music are often second guessed by listeners, Drake is quick to dismiss any doubts you may have about him. Whether he's just belting out punch lines, or slowing it down with an R&B kinda vibe, this dude is serious. See for yourself here. If that's not enough, check out his MySpace.
